Read below and find out about the various causes and symptoms of Progeria.

Progeria affects the growth and development of a child and the child is unable to attain his optimal body weight and height.

A child suffering from Progeria displays signs of premature aging and has wrinkled, loose, and sagging skin; narrow face with disfigured features; and a large head. The child's scalp veins are predominantly visible and this problem often leads to hair loss.

Progeria also leads to other symptoms like stiff joints, prominent eyes, and fragile bones. Though the problem of Progeria affects the growth and development of a child, it does not lead to mental retardation.

The child suffering from Progeria not only displays visible signs of aging, he also suffers from various medical problems, especially cardiovascular problems.

It has been found that Progeria leads to blockage in arteries and thereby increases risk of heart attacks and strokes. It is for this reason that the life span of children suffering from Progeria is very less.

Along with the above given symptoms, Progeria can also lead to some other medical problems like cataracts and tumors.

After having looked at the various signs and symptoms of Progeria, let's now look at the factors that lead to this problem. Progeria is a genetic disorder and occurs due to genetic mutation. Though Progeria is a genetic disorder, it is not inherited.

Progeria is a rare disease and there is no definitive treatment for it. However, regular checkups and monitoring of a child's health can help in providing relief from its various symptoms. More than anything else, a child suffering from Progeria requires his parent's constant love and support to effectively deal with his problem.
